Parametric

Climate change is increasing the frequency and severity of flood events, creating greater risks for communities and businesses around the world. In the face of the challenge, parametric insurance has evolved to fill the gap where traditional indemnity insurance might not be applicable, to help you manage flood impacts with clarity and confidence.

What is parametric insurance?

Parametric insurance offers a fast and transparent route to financial support when a defined event occurs. Instead of waiting for physical loss assessments, payouts are automatically triggered once pre-agreed thresholds—such as rainfall intensity or flood depth—are met.

This means you receive rapid payouts, with reduced administrative burden and a more predictable financial protection when it matters most. With aligned objectives and preagreed triggers, parametric insurance is a powerful tool for strengthening disaster risk financing and maintaining operational continuity.

How is flood parametric insurance different?

Flooding presents unique challenges because no single indicator captures the full complexity of an event. Factors such as rainfall patterns, land use, river response and the presence of defences all influence outcomes. As a result, robust flood parametric insurance products require high-quality, consistent data to minimise uncertainty and strengthen confidence in trigger design.

JBA addresses this complexity with globally consistent flood modelling, detailed flood hazard insights and high-resolution data that support risk-reflective pricing and dependable triggers across a wide range of environments and risk scenarios.

JBA’s parametric toolkit

Our parametric insurance toolkit delivers the data, models and monitoring technology needed to design and operate robust parametric solutions for excess rainfall and flood. Our Oasis-enabled global flood models and global events sets form a robust foundation for pricing flood risk and understanding long term hazard patterns.

Flood Foresight adds real time flood monitoring and forecasting to support rapid trigger evaluation. Additional tools—including sensors, river level gauges and satellite-based flood observation—provide independent verification as needed. Where an excess rainfall product is more appropriate, JBA also has experience of developing risk analysis and monitoring solutions for rainfall.

This flexible, data driven toolkit supports sovereign risk financing schemes, insurance portfolios and singlesite flood parametric policies with clarity and scientific confidence.

Expertise and collaboration

We work closely with you to develop reliable, transparent and operationally effective parametric flood insurance solutions. Our process begins with defining risk objectives and selecting the most suitable parametric triggers. Using consistent hazard and risk data, we assess payout frequency and configure coverage that aligns with your financial resilience needs.

During implementation, we integrate monitoring systems such as Flood Foresight to ensure realtime event assessment. If needed JBA can also act as an independent calculation agent, providing impartial trigger verification and enabling rapid insurance payout that support disaster risk financing and organisational continuity.
