Flood Models

Our market-leading flood catastrophe models offer the ability to model potential loss anywhere in the world.

JBA is the first to offer probabilistic flood modelling on a truly global scale, enabling the insurance and non-insurance sectors to better understand and manage their flood exposure at any location worldwide. Now, there’s no need to ask the question ‘Do you have a flood model
for country X?’ because the answer is, simply, yes.

We model at 30m resolution for river and surface water flooding for every country globally, using JBA’s market-leading 30m Flood Maps and first-of-its-kind Flood Event Set. Through our modelling technology, this data can be substituted to suit client needs, for example incorporating JBA’s 5m resolution mapping across different flood types in the UK, US and Europe, JBA’s climate change adjusted modelling for the UK, or other hazard data available to the client.

JBA's modelling technology provides unlimited customisation and enables clients to leverage their proprietary knowledge and data to reflect their own view of risk. Furthermore, every aspect of the model can be customised including substituting different flood types, perils, vulnerabilities, defence information and more to suit client needs.

However, as The Flood People, we will also continue to provide a JBA view of risk and can provide a consultancy service to those looking for further expertise or a more tailored solution.

We also offer a leading multi-peril crop model for India to help global re/insurers participating in the crop industry better understand and manage the risk from multiple extreme weather perils.

Results from our catastrophe modelling can be used for:

  • Reinsurance pricing – gives the long-term expected loss cost beyond claims experience.
  • Assessing capital requirements – assesses the unexpected loss cost from low frequency, high severity catastrophic events.
  • Planning and portfolio management – demonstrates the impact of diversification and concentration of risk and potential changes to reinsurance structures.

Our flood modelling is Oasis-enabled - it fits seamlessly within the Oasis Loss Modelling Framework and subsequently supports all standard Oasis interfaces – OED, results file formats, Oasis API, and uses the Oasis financial/risk metrics to generate ground up location level losses.

It's also platform agnostic and available across a variety of platforms, including Oasis, the Nasdaq Risk Modelling service, and ELEMENTS, as well as our own portfolio analysis service.
