Executive Chair - JBA Risk Management Ltd.

Simon became Executive Chair of JBA Risk Management in 2021, having been Managing Director of since JBA's establishment in 2011.

Simon brings over 25 years of experience in the water and river engineering sector to the role. In his previous positions working with the UK Environment Agency, he pioneered techniques to facilitate two-dimensional flood modelling approaches which were used to produce national scale flood mapping projects. Since then, Simon has been involved flood mapping and modelling work spanning the globe.

Simon enjoys working at the forefront of technical development within the insurance industry and is involved in projects looking to develop innovative approaches to probabilistic modelling, including our leading JFlow® software and modelling technology.

Jane's photoJANE TOOTHILL

Managing Director – JBA Risk Management Ltd.

Jane was appointed Managing Director of JBA Risk Management Limited in 2021, after previously holding the position of Company Director since 2011.

Jane is responsible for catastrophe modelling and business development in the reinsurance sector. She joined JBA Group in 2008 to set up its catastrophe analysis division, following 15 years of experience in risk management and probabilistic model development in the insurance sector.

Prior to joining JBA, Jane worked as a model developer and project manager at EQECAT and headed the European Model Development Team at reinsurance broker Guy Carpenter, alongside acting as an advisor to Zurich Financial Services.

During her career, Jane has overseen the development of successful major insurance catastrophe models, covering a wide range of natural catastrophes.

Matt's photoMATT REID

Managing Director – JBA Risk Management Inc.

Matt joined the business in 2016 as Managing Director of JBA Risk Management Inc. and brings over 30 years of experience to the role. Matt is responsible for building the company's presence in the US, playing a vital part in our global business development.

Matt previously worked as Vice President of Strategy and Business Development at Risk Management Solutions and his experience spans a wide variety of roles, with over 10 years in risk management, from product marketing and communications to engineering and software. He also helped to establish two successful start up companies, providing business development expertise.

This wide range of experience enables Matt to bring a broad perspective to JBA and create tailored approaches for individual client needs.

MANSI KALRA

Managing Director – JBA Risk Management Pte Ltd.

Mansi joined JBA Risk Management, Singapore in March 2022 as Managing Director. With over 17 years of experience in the re/insurance sector, Mansi began her career as a Reinsurance Manager at ICICI Lombard in 2005 and went on to work with Risk Management Systems (India), Asia Risk Centre, Asia Capital Re, and Nanyang Technological University.

Mansi has extensive knowledge in NAT CAT risk assessment and flood/drought/agriculture modelling and has significant experience in product development and design for high-resolution exposure databases. She is a Master of Science in Mathematics and Computer Science.

NIKKI PILGRIM

Director – JBA Risk Management Ltd.

Nikki Pilgrim is a Director with 15 years of experience in modelling and managing natural hazards and catastrophe risks, with a focus on floods. Having joined JBA Risk Management in 2016, she currently leads Client Development and oversees JBA's product development strategy.

Nikki has overseen the development of over 10 major insurance catastrophe models to date, including perils such as river floods, sea surges, windstorms, and earthquakes.

She started her career with Brit Insurance, working as a Catastrophe Risk Analyst. Later, she headed up the Asian Model Suite at Risk Management Solutions, driving engagement within the DRR community for the use of catastrophe models.

Helen Smith

Director – JBA Risk Management Ltd.

Helen joined JBA Risk Management in 2007 and is one of our Technical Directors. She has over 15 years of experience in hydrological and hydraulic modelling. Helen worked on JBA’s first national (UK) flood map development project in 2008 before becoming part of the team to map river flood hazard across Europe – a first in terms of scale and level of detail.

She then led the development of the world’s first global flood maps, released to clients in 2014, and continued to be responsible for spearheading innovative and scientifically robust methodologies to keep JBA’s global flood maps at the forefront of flood risk innovation. Helen now leads our programme of work around non-flood perils.

David Wood

Director – JBA Risk Management Ltd.

David is Head of Product Development and has over 16 years of industry experience. He holds a PhD in Informatics and Machine Learning and oversees the teams that create JBA’s market leading global data, catastrophe models and software.

David specialises in Artificial Intelligence, Data Science and Software Development. He was responsible for introducing agile working methodologies within JBA and continues to oversee this process. David is an experienced researcher and has published papers on machine learning and statistics, along with presenting internationally to the scientific community.

JUDITH ELLISON

Climate Change Commercial Lead – JBA Risk Management Ltd.

Judith joined JBA Risk Management as a Catastrophe Modelling Manager in 2020, bringing with her 20 years of experience in natural catastrophe risk modelling and analysis. At JBA, she has been applying her extensive experience in the re/insurance sphere to explore new product options including an update to our leading UK Climate Change Flood Model and the development of the Climate Change Analytics data suite.

Before joining JBA, Judith worked at Guy Carpenter and then as a Senior Catastrophe Modelling Manager at MS Amlin, driving technical methodologies that are used to assess natural hazards, including floods.

MARK GOODMAN

Business Development Manager – JBA Risk Management Ltd.

Having been with JBA Risk Management since February 2022, Mark is a Business Development Manager with a specific focus on the financial and property sectors.

Mark has over 25 years of experience in client relationship management, most recently with the Swiss bank - UBS, where he spent the last 11 years handling their relationships with wealth managers, private banks, and financial advisory firms throughout the UK.

Mark is helping clients in the financial, property and other business sectors to use JBA’s data to improve their understanding of flood risk, especially considering climate change and increased regulatory requirements for investors to understand their exposure.

PETER BRAZIL

Business Development Manager – JBA Risk Management Ltd.

Peter’s JBA Risk Management journey started in 2021 – he leads the push into investment markets as a new growth opportunity. Having spent more than 25 years in business development roles, Peter has 20+ years of experience in the investment management industry - working for large global asset managers, including Franklin Templeton and Allianz Global Investors.

He worked extensively on Sustainability and ESG whilst investing in asset classes such as equities, fixed income, and real estate. Peter has also looked after the UK and Global Financial institution relationships. At JBA, he wants to build and grow the company’s data exposure in non-insurance and the investment management industry, with a major focus on the impact of climate change on assets.

HAYDN MARCHANT

Re/insurance Specialist – JBA Risk Management Ltd.

Haydn is part of the Client Development team. Although he has several UK-based re/insurers as clients, at JBA Risk Management, his focus is mainly to develop business from Africa, especially South Africa, and the Middle East.

With over 30 years in the re/insurance industry, Haydn started at Mercantile & General Re (now Swiss Re). From facultative and treaty reinsurance underwriting to direct marketing and management, his role included everything. Later, he became the Managing Director of Swiss Re, during which he ran a subsidiary of Pinnacle Insurance PLC in South Africa, taking the start-up to an R100 million income company.

Having moved to the UK in 2008, he worked with Hollard, Aon, Gallaghers and Qdos in various development roles before joining JBA in early 2022.

ERIK HOEPPNER

Business Development Lead – JBA Risk Management Ltd.

Erik has been with JBA Risk Management since 2012. He is responsible for the development of international business for flood maps and catastrophe models, with a particular focus on Continental Europe and the 30m global mapping data. He is a qualified mapping engineer with a background in remote sensing and GIS. 

Erik got his professional career underway at a digital mapping and geospatial solutions company, Intermap Technologies. He started as a Senior Flight Planner and worked his way through to become a Product Manager and Business Developer. His experience includes working in airborne elevation data acquisition planning, where he trained and managed processing teams to ensure the suitability of the elevation data for mapping applications and geospatial services.

PAUL MAISEY

Environmental Scientist – JBA Risk Management Ltd.

Having started his JBA Risk Management adventure in 2019, Paul brings more than 20 years of experience in meteorology in the public sector within research, technology, and business development roles.

He had worked with the insurance industry for several years before joining JBA. His recent focus has been on working with the international development community to use catastrophe models – this is to estimate flood risk in terms of population impacts and economic loss for disaster risk finance. He now leads the company’s team of consultants, and his focus is business development for the team.

Paul qualified as a meteorologist from the University of Reading with a BSc in Physics and Meteorology and more recently achieved an MBA with the Open University.

Paul's photoPaul Young

Lead Climate Scientist – JBA Risk Management Ltd.

Paul joined JBA Risk Management in November 2022 from Lancaster University, where he was a senior lecturer leading a climate and atmospheric science research group. He has published extensively in the peer-reviewed literature, been a lead author of international reports on the health of the ozone layer and African air pollution and climate change, trained over a dozen graduate students, and worked with businesses, communities, and artists to better understand and communicate global environmental change.

At JBA, Paul works to ensure that we are making the best use of academic science in our data and models as well as coordinating our scientific publications and our collaborations with research partners. He wants to facilitate the connections between the very clever people at JBA with the very clever people in academia and beyond.

Fadoua's photoFadoua Eddounia

Lead Catastrophe Model Developer – JBA Risk Management Ltd.

As Lead Catastrophe Modeller, Fadoua brings a wealth of experience that crosses both academia and industry. Having been with JBA Risk Management since 2021, she has 7 years of experience in R&D. Initially, she worked on the correlation between microphysical proprieties of high-level clouds (ice clouds) and the state of the atmosphere at a global scale, whilst carrying out her post-doctoral research, exploring satellite and in-situ data to validate the output of different chemical transport models. She later joined the industry as a Senior Scientist at CoreLogic, working on the development of risk assessment tools using climate model simulations.

At JBA, Fadoua is currently working on expanding the development of modelling capabilities. She has a PhD in climate and environmental sciences with specialisation in remote sensing techniques from the Ecole Polytechnique de Paris.
