Software Engineer (Platform Team)

Our ambition at JBA is to deliver scientifically robust yet lightning-fast flood catastrophe models to our users, who span the re/insurance, international development, and public sectors on a global basis. We’re looking for a talented and enthusiastic software engineer to join our Platform Team, working hands-on with cutting edge Linux / Python technologies in helping us achieve that vision. It will be challenging, but as part of a technically excellent and supportive team you’ll have a great time getting there. Get in touch if you’re interested!

Your role

You will work collaboratively within our cross-functional product team, considering and assimilating views from across the company and wider industry in maintaining JBA’s position as world leader in the development and delivery of flood risk data products and analytics. Your immediate focus will be on accelerating the runtime of JBA's high resolution flood models within a clustered environment. Focus will then shift towards improving the range and sophistication of supported modelling workflows, and the way in which uncertainty in modelling inputs is captured, propagated through, and reported from the modelling process.

This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to a platform and associated models that are actively disrupting a traditional industry.

The team member we’re looking for

We’re looking for an enthusiastic, motivated software engineer, preferably with some commercial experience. You will demonstrate personal effectiveness, and the ability to contribute strongly within a self-organising team through collaboration with talented people across the company and partner organisations.

Training will be provided for candidates who can strengthen the diversity across our team yet may lack some of the desired technical skills.

The following are essential for the role:

  • Strong knowledge of Python and associated numerical libraries (e.g., Pandas, Numpy, Numba)
  • Familiarity with Git
  • An aptitude for working with numbers
  • The ability to take ownership of and solve problems (with support, of course)
  • A growth mindset with the willingness to share, ask questions and learn as well as appreciating different perspectives
  • The ability to actively scope requirements for our clients, whilst considering quality at the forefront of our development

It would also be useful if you have any of the following:

  • A scientific/mathematical background
  • Knowledge of:
    • Linux
    • Bash
    • Docker
    • Kubernetes
    • PyPi
    • REST API development
  • Experience with cloud infrastructure(s), e.g. AWS, Microsoft Azure
  • Experience with high-performance / distributed computing
  • Knowledge, and experience in the practical application, of agile working theory and practices, e.g. Scrum, Kanban
  • Experience in / knowledge of the re/insurance industry
