Senior Hydrologist

Are you an experienced hydrologist? Do you have an interest in using traditional hydrology with methods of machine learning and a desire to shape future developments in flood frequency and other hydrological modelling applications? If the answer is ‘yes!’, then read on.

We are seeking an individual to lead the application of hydrology methods at JBA Risk Management Limited. This will involve the day-to-day use of skills in hydrological methods as well as the strategic development of new methods and consultancy in the company.

We provide industry-leading flood maps to clients. This requires the estimation of flood frequency at gauged and ungauged locations throughout the world. This is an exciting time for flood frequency estimation where innovators are fusing traditional hydrology with methods of machine learning. You will have freedom to shape future developments in flood frequency as well as other hydrological modelling applications. You will be supported by a talented team of colleagues, access to a sophisticated—yet customisable—IT infrastructure, and a culture of professionalism, personal development, and research.


The successful candidate will match the following skills:

  • A solid knowledge base in the general principles of hydrology as would be found in canonical texts such as Hydrology in Practice (Shaw et al. 1994);
  • Experience in hydrological statistics with flood frequency estimation based on extreme value theory being particularly relevant;
  • Rainfall-runoff modelling using a conceptual model such as IHACRES, DBM, HBV, or PDM;
  • Good computer programming skills at the scripting level (preferably using R or Python) and the ability to work with large and often complex data sets;
  • Geostatistics skills using either GIS (such as QGIS) or programmatically (such as the sp package in R);
  • Machine/statistical learning experience of libraries such as TensorFlow, CNTK, Theano etc. (or more likely via an interface to these such as Keras).

Knowledge of the insurance industry is beneficial but not a necessary requirement for the role.

The job will be based in our Skipton (North Yorkshire) office. The Skipton office is located on the Broughton Hall estate and is surrounded by 3000 acres of parkland, farmland, woodland and moors. This unique work setting sits on the boundary of the Yorkshire Dales National Park and is close to Skipton, named the best place to live in Britain by the Sunday Times.
