Senior Catastrophe Model Developer

We’re the global leaders in flood risk management and we’re looking for an experienced catastrophe modeller to join our catastrophe model development team, working on our new Global Flood Model – a revolutionary, first of its kind flood model on a worldwide scale.

We’re better known amongst our clients as The Flood People. We help the insurance, reinsurance and property industries understand flood risk. Our flood maps, catastrophe models and data are used by some of the world’s leading organisations. We’re experts in translating complex, scientific data into useful information, using sophisticated hydraulic approaches and models to provide cutting-edge flood risk intelligence.

The role

This is a senior role within a small team developing, validating and running our next-generation catastrophe models. We are looking for someone who will bring flexibility and independence of thought to our model developments.

About you

You’ll need to have built and validated models before and be able to demonstrate a rigorous, scientific approach in your work. You will possess a strong understanding of different ways catastrophe models are used, and the links between these use cases and the technical capabilities of a model. We’ll expect you to develop an understanding of company-level priorities and be able to translate them into incremental model developments within an Agile framework.

Our ideal candidate will have experience working in the re/insurance industry, specifically in catastrophe model development, and a demonstrable record of delivering significant projects. You should have a strong academic background with a further degree (MSc or equivalent / PhD) in natural hazards or a relevant scientific or mathematical subject.

Skills in project management, report writing and client interaction are all important, along with the ability to communicate well to both technical and non-technical audiences. You’ll need to be organised and a strong team player, capable of independent and innovative thinking in a challenging business environment.

You will be able to demonstrate the following essential attributes:

  • experience developing and running catastrophe models, particularly in the re/insurance industry
  • a professional, systematic, scientific approach
  • an enquiring technical background with strong numerical data handling and analysis skills
  • the ability to collaborate and motivate a team to meet deadlines, or deliver your own work independently
  • the ability to understand and communicate technical concepts in both written reports and oral presentations to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • a flexibility of mind and an enthusiasm to learn and contribute to the modelling techniques we’re constantly developing at JBA

Ideally, you will also have experience in several of the following:

  • commercial project management
  • team or project leadership
  • flood modelling
  • an understanding of re/insurance terms and conditions
  • Agile working practices
  • scripting, programming (especially Linux and Python)
  • GIS
  • presenting to clients
