Apply for the JBA
Graduate Scheme today

Applications are now open for the JBA Risk Management Graduate Scheme!

It’s your chance to join the global leaders in flood science, working alongside some of the best minds in the industry to develop first-of-its-kind flood and climate change data for some of the world's largest organisations. We’re proud to be pioneers in our field and are known to our clients as The Flood People.

You’ll follow a competency-based learning and professional development framework, allowing you to build essential skills such as project management, client management, leadership, technical skills and personal effectiveness. This is supported by a structured training programme made up of modules delivered in easily accessed formats. You’ll get to contribute to pioneering projects straight away and you’ll also have the chance to rotate through different teams within the business to broaden your skills and knowledge.

I recently completed a six month secondment to another area of the business. I worked with our Statistics and Hydrology team to work on our Event Set and Climate Change Analytics projects. My day typically consisted of researching third-party datasets and using R to plot comparisons between prospective datasets to provide a recommendation of which one to use for these projects, as well as I attending regular client calls. I found the experience of having a secondment to another team really valuable - I was able to learn from colleagues who I wouldn’t ordinarily work with and develop new skills.
Eilidh Ronald, JBA Graduate

What can I get involved with?

Flood mapping

We produce high-resolution global flood maps using sophisticated hydrology and hydraulic approaches. Our expert mapping techniques are underpinned by cutting-edge science and our focus is on continuous innovation. We were the first to use gaming technology to run our 2D hydraulic modelling software (JFlow), the first to make global flood maps commercially available and the first to produce the highest resolution flood maps on the market for the US and Europe at 5m resolution nationwide.

Catastrophe Modelling

Our experts develop market-leading flood catastrophe models using cutting-edge methodologies, sophisticated data analysis and in-depth research. Our probabilistic catastrophe models enable our clients to make informed decisions on their risk. We strive for innovation and remain at the forefront of our industry, producing the first UK Climate Change Flood Model and the first Global Flood Model on the market. We also undertake bespoke consultancy work on a global scale for clients with individual needs.

Software Development

Our software development team produces the tools we use to build our maps and run our models; in other words, they help to remove big and complex computational problems. We are constantly searching for better, faster, more automated and more correct ways to deliver data and results. We collaborate with partners to place ourselves at the forefront of technological trends in our industry, working across a variety of languages and stacks. We pioneered JBA's new modelling engine, FLY Technology, which enables flood modelling on a global scale for the first time.

We support new ideas and innovation and we believe that learning and development is key to that. We’re focused on helping our staff develop their skills and offer a generous training budget per year to every member of staff. Our well-regarded professional development programme provides the opportunity to enhance and update technical and management skills throughout your career.  We encourage and support professional qualifications including chartered membership of professional associations.

I like the fact that the graduate scheme provides a structured introduction to both JBA working practices and flood mapping and modelling in general. The graduate scheme competencies provide a helpful framework around which I can structure my on-the-job and internal training, learning skills across different areas of the business from project management to client relations. I also like the fact that there are multiple graduates on the scheme at any one time who are all at different stages, meaning there’s always someone you can ask for advice.
