Flood Modeller

Are you an experienced flood modeller who has delivered a range of hydraulic modelling projects? Do you enjoy driving improvements through the application of new and emerging science, machine learning and innovation? If the answer is ‘yes!’, read on.

We seek an innovative hydraulic modeller to guide the continued development of our flood maps globally.  Our focus is on national scale flood mapping and we develop pioneering approaches to applying local detail, continually looking for ways to reduce uncertainty in our maps and models. We own the world’s largest dedicated flood modelling computer grid and are looking for an individual with experience of hydraulic modelling to help us realise our ambitious goals of creating the world’s best hazard maps at national scales.

You will be part of a flood mapping team that is skilled in hydraulic modelling and the use of GIS (ESRI, QGIS), tasked with the production and regular update of our flood maps. Your day-to-day role within this team will be to lead projects and drive innovation through close interface with our in-house hydraulic modelling teams and software developers. We pride ourselves on driving continual improvement in our data production processes through applying science and testing new approaches.

You will be forward thinking, never tiring of asking “why?”, and capable of getting to grips with a range of modelling processes. You will inspire and mentor colleagues and will be comfortable presenting scientific concepts to our clients, as well as to technical and non-technical audiences

Our flood maps are used by insurers and reinsurers globally. Our teams use GIS and hydraulic models to create detailed flood maps, working with colleagues in other areas of expertise in the fields of hydrology, catastrophe modelling, flood risk management and software development. You will be largely involved in work on internal development projects which are driven by demanding client deadlines.

Project management, technical report writing and client interaction is a key requirement of the post. You will be a strong team player who is capable of independent and creative thinking in a challenging and progressive business environment.

Opportunities to gain new skills working in a fast-paced environment, with some travel, will be provided to the right candidates.

The ideal candidate for this role will have a degree(s) in a relevant subject and proven experience of river, surface water and coastal flood modelling in the UK and/or globally. We are looking for an innovative thinker with an eye for detail.

The following are essential attributes to meet the demands of this post:

  • Experience in quality assurance and reviewing hydraulic models
  • A clear innovator to recommend solutions for overcoming problems and supporting the continuous development of our flood maps
  • Good organisational and project management experience
  • The ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • An experienced mentor to support the technical development of team members
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to communicate technical concepts to technical and non-technical audiences
