Entry-Level Catastrophe Model Developer

Your role

You will work collaboratively in our cross-functional product teams, developing methods and performing analysis to continue JBA’s success as the world leader in flood risk science. You will assist with the development and running of catastrophe models used for natural hazard risk assessment by insurers, reinsurers, the disaster risk reduction community and in international development projects.

Key responsibilities when working in our Loss Model team include a mix of:

  • Data analysis, method development, and presentation of analysis results/methods
  • Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
  • Research and Development and problem solving to identify and overcome issues
  • Statistical analysis and model validation
  • Portfolio analysis and interpretation of results
  • Preparing documentation for a range of audiences
  • Working within the Scrum framework as part of our Agile approach
  • Technical support of our models internally and externally to users with a range of backgrounds
  • Collaborating with other product teams to support the development of hazard maps and risk metrics, climate change data and services, and innovative software

The team member we’re looking for

We’re looking for a motivated individual early in their career who enjoys teamwork, collaboration, and innovation. You will demonstrate personal effectiveness and can strongly communicate and contribute within a self-organising team. You will have experience using GIS and will have an active scientific interest. Some Python programming experience is desirable although training will be provided for candidates who can strengthen the diversity across our team, yet may lack some technical skills, or who have similar skills in a different application.

The following are essential for the role:

  • Relevant scientific or numerate degree
  • An analytical mindset with strong data handling skills
  • Experience of GIS and spatial data, ideally QGIS and GDAL
  • A keen interest in what we do, why we do what we do, and how we do it, especially in an evolving world of natural hazards
  • A growth mindset with the willingness to ask questions and learn, as well as appreciating different perspectives
  • Ability to actively contribute to scoping requirements for our clients whilst considering quality at the forefront of our development
  • Ability to understand and communicate technical concepts via written reports and oral presentations, to both technical and non-technical audiences

You may also have experience with:

  • Windows and Linux operating systems
  • Big data and a range of formats
  • Programming languages including Python, SQL
  • Agile working theory and practices like Scrum and Kanban
  • An understanding of the re/insurance industry
