Catastrophe Model Developer

Are you a forward-thinking catastrophe modeller? Do you have the skills and mindset to develop catastrophe models (particularly flood models) in innovative, new ways? If so, we want to hear from you!

About JBA

We’re better known amongst our clients as The Flood People. We help the insurance, reinsurance and property industries understand flood risk. Our flood maps, catastrophe models and data are used by some of the world’s leading organisations. We’re experts in translating complex, scientific data into useful information, using sophisticated hydraulic approaches and models to provide cutting-edge flood risk intelligence.

The role

We have an exciting new opportunity for a bright individual to join our catastrophe modelling team. The role involves developing, validating, running and constantly improving our new generation of flood catastrophe models, which are used across the global re/insurance industry and increasingly on international development projects for disaster risk reduction. More experienced applicants will have built and validated catastrophe models before and will possess a strong understanding of the different ways in which these models are used in the re/insurance industry and beyond, along with a track record of delivering significant projects.

Skills in project management, report writing and client interaction are all important, along with the ability to communicate well to both technical and non-technical audiences. You’ll need to be organised and a strong team player, capable of independent and innovative thinking in a challenging business environment.

You will be able to demonstrate the following essential attributes:

  • A professional, systematic, scientific approach
  • An enquiring technical background with strong numerical data handling and analysis skills
  • A collaborative, motivated approach to teamwork and meeting deadlines
  • The ability to understand and communicate technical concepts in both written reports and oral presentations to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • A flexibility of mind and an enthusiasm to learn, adapt and contribute to the modelling techniques we’re constantly developing at JBA

Ideally, you will also have experience in several of the following:

  • Commercial project management; Agile working practices
  • Developing and running catastrophe models, particularly in the re/insurance industry
  • Flood perils and flood modelling
  • An understanding of re/insurance terms and conditions
  • Familiarity with Windows and Linux operating systems; scripting, programming (Bash, Python, SQL, R); GIS concepts, tools and spatial data

JBA will provide training for particularly high-quality candidates who lack a particular skillset but whom we consider will fit well into our team.
