We are seeking applications from high quality statisticians with experience in statistical modelling of environmental data. The open position is in a small technical team tasked with developing components for national-scale catastrophe models for insurers and reinsurers. The role will involve diverse statistical methods required to create probabilistic flood and emerging hazard models. Alongside the commercial aspect of this role, there will be an opportunity to follow and publish research interests if desired.
The position will suit a strong team player who is capable of independent and innovative thinking in a challenging business environment. The individual who is offered this role will have a PhD in a relevant subject or proven commercial experience of statistical modelling. Candidates with a background in one or more of the following specialisms are particularly encouraged to apply:
• Extreme Value Theory
• Environmental modelling e.g. extreme rainfall, river flow or sea level
• Computational statistics
• Spatial statistics
• Catastrophe modelling
• Actuarial science
In addition to excellent statistical knowledge with a relevant specialism, candidates will be expected to have the following skills:
• Proficient user of R
• Excellent presentation and report writing skills
• Ability to explain complex statistical concepts to non-statisticians
• Experience with RStudio and R package development, and familiarity with source control and issue tracking systems
• Experience working with big data
• Project management experience
• Record of peer-reviewed scientific papers and an interest to continue writing publications
The job will be based in the UK in our Skipton (North Yorkshire) office.
